Dispersed Camping in Colorado’s Prairie Grasslands

It’s hard to describe the vast expanse of Colorado’s Prairie Grasslands, a hidden spot with a unique and serene camping experience. Far from crowds and nestled amidst the untouched beauty of nature, dispersed camping in the Prairie Grasslands allows you to reconnect with the land and find solace in its open spaces. You’lll find the Prairie grasslands in the northeast part of Colorado, about 35 miles to the east of Fort Collins. You’ll know you’ve arrived when you see the well-known Pawnee Buttes.

Dispersed camping is allowed in the Prairie Grasslands and offers the freedom to choose your own campsite amidst the sprawling prairies. Just be sure you reference the Motorized Vehicles Use Map with the Forest Service for regulations about various motorized vehicles on national forest lands. As you venture into this picturesque wilderness, scout for a location that captures your heart—a serene meadow, a sheltered grove, or a spot overlooking the vast grasslands. Take in the breathtaking views of rolling hills and endless skies, as you settle into your home away from home.

With dispersed camping comes a responsibility to respect and preserve the natural environment. Before setting up camp, ensure you are familiar with the Leave No Trace principles, minimizing your impact on the delicate ecosystem. Pack out what you bring in, avoid disturbing wildlife, and be mindful of any fire restrictions or regulations. We woke up to the sights and sounds of cattle next to our camper in the morning and they roam free throughout this area.

We were really excited to use our new generator for the first time, but it wasn’t necessary. The temperature was perfect for opening up the windows and enjoying the fresh air.

Dispersed camping in the Prairie Grasslands is an opportunity to slow down, unplug, and appreciate the simplicity of life. Savor meals cooked over a campfire, relish in the warmth of companionship, and allow the sounds of nature to lull you into a state of tranquility. Embrace the beauty of simple pleasures and the feeling of being one with the land.
